Many users come accross some error messages while trying to update the antivirus program. Some also reported that after clicking the update button, the feature doesn’t respond and redirect to the previous page.

The reasons behind the failure of AVG updates include outdated versions of the antivirus, temporary update files, software conflict, interference of Windows Firewall, etc. In the following section, we will deal with the workarounds toward resolving the “AVG update failed” message.

Fixes to Try if AVG Update Failed in Windows 10

In the previous section, we have given you a mild idea about the factors that may cause the “AVG update failed Windows 10” problem. Don’t worry, as we have come up with some excellent tricks that you can follow to get rid of the error.

Trick #1: Delete Temporary Update Files

We have given this trick the top priority, as this works for most users who have gone through the same update failure issue. The presence of the update files in the computer’s directory can lead to failing the antivirus update. In such a case, you need to remove the temporary update files. Here are the steps that you can follow to remove these files.

  • Double -click on the AVG shortcut icon on the desktop to launch the AVG user interface.
  • Now, go to the “Options” and click on “Advanced Settings”.
  • Switch over to the “Update” section and you will see the option of “Manage”. Tap on that option.
  • Click on the “Delete temporary update files” button.
  • Exit from the window after that.
  • Relaunch the program and try to update AVG.

Note: You can also delete the file manually by navigating “Computer > C > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > avg > update > download folder” and deleting all the files in the folder.

Trick #2: Disable Windows Defender

Windows Defender is the built-in shield for the system that protects it from malicious attacks. Despite having Windows defender, users often install other antivirus programs. It is seen that many antivirus programs need to disable Windows Defender to run smoothly.

Hence, if you want the AVG to run without showing up any update error, disable the Windows Defender. Below are the steps to disable the Windows Defender to troubleshoot the issues when AVG update failed.

  • Click on the Start button, located at the bottom left corner of your desktop.
  • Navigate “Settings > Update and Security”. Select the “Windows Defender” option.
  • Toggle the button placed under the “Real-time protection” to turn it off.

To disable Windows Defender permanently, you have to perform some additional tasks. Let’s have a look at the steps.

  • Press Windows+R to launch the Run dialog box.
  • Type “gpedit.msc” and hit Enter. Click “OK” when it prompts.
  • Now, navigate “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender > Real-time Protection”.
  • Double-click on this feature and hit the “Enabled” option to deactivate the Windows Defender.
  • Make sure to tap OK before closing the window.

Trick #3: Turn off Windows Firewall

A firewall is a program designed to protect the system from unauthorized access from an unknown source. The Windows Firewall might block some functionalities in AVG antivirus, which can prevent the program from updating. In such a case, you can temporarily deactivate the firewall.

To apply this method, go to the Control Panel and then choose “System and Security”. You can see the “Turn Windows Firewall on or off” option on the left panel of the window. Tap on that option to open it. Select “Turn off Windows Firewall” for both the options and hit OK after that.

Now, update the AVG to check if it’s still giving the failure problem. After completion of the update, you can turn on the firewall service.

Trick #4: Delete Unnecessary Apps

If any unnecessary app exists in the system, it may cause issues like AVG update failed. Moreover, the presence of another antivirus program can create conflict and result in the update failure issue. Hence, you must ensure that there should not be such apps present in the system.

For deleting any program, you can follow the instructions below.

  • Click on the Start button and then navigate “All Settings > Apps & Features”. Here, you will see all the installed programs on the system.
  • Look if any suspicious application is present there. If yes, right-click on that software and choose the “Uninstall” option to delete it from your system.
  • If you have any other antivirus installed on the PC, you should delete the program as well.
  • So, follow the steps discussed in this method to uninstall other security programs.
  • Next, follow the on screen instructions to delete the program completely.
  • Restart the system after finishing the process and try updating AVG.

Trick #5: Uninstall and Reinstall the Antivirus

If none of the above methods work, you can try this one. Firstly, you need to uninstall AVG antivirus from the system. Then, reinstall the latest version of the software. By doing so, the AVG update failure issue can be resolved. Follow the below guidelines to perform the process.

  • Launch the Run dialog box by following steps in previous solutions.
  • Type “appwiz.cpl” and press OK to open the “Programs and Features” window.
  • Select all the apps of the AVG antivirus package one by one and right-click on them. Choose the “Uninstall” button to finish the removal process.
  • You can also use third-party apps to uninstall and delete all the components of AVG antivirus.
  • Restart the system after that and download the latest version of AVG from the official website.
  • Install the same and reactivate it with a product key. Hopefully, you can update AVG after this without any error.

We hope you don’t have to try the last trick to solve the “AVG update failed” problem. All the methods mentioned above are quite effective in solving the AVG update error. Hence, try them out from the beginning and see which one can fix the issue.
